>[!error|noicon] About
> Langhorne was the captain of The Night’s Folley, a formidable ship that ran on the just and fair ruling of its overseer.
>
> While Langhorne’s ethics were not the most pure and revered, _he was considered a saint compared to the other more infamous, dubious pirates._ He rarely killed unless he absolutely had to, and made a point to raid those with a large amount of wealth - almost Robin Hood-esq. He rarely kept his share of the stolen goods, giving the rest away to the people at every port town he visited.
>
> Langhorne had several wives and several children, but as to where they are and what they’re up to now _is a mystery even to Langhorne most of the time._
>
> Langhorne was a pseudo/stand-in father and mentor figure to Silver during his reign, and his strong sense of morality was what gave Silver her tendency to have stubborn and ‘black and white’ ideas of the way things should work. He was not the best mentor, though, and _frequently put his crew and job above Silver_, believing in keeping the peace when it came to conflict resolution.
>
> He was universally loved by his crew, always getting consistently elected and captain with usually little to no competition. Before his reign of piracy, Langhorne _worked as a privateer for the marine military_, and turned to the life of crime and piracy as a way to seek out a living when hundreds upon thousands were discharged and left jobless, especially after gaining debilitating injuries and mental illnesses that left them unable to work normally. Langhorne speaks little of his life otherwise, and what had led him to become so generous to the point of losing profit.

>>[!error|noicon] Trivia
>> - Langhorne is overly empathetic to a fault; he is _too afraid to look like a ‘bad person’_, and cares heavily about being a strong captain to his crew
>> - Consistently feels obligated to his crew and role, sometimes at the cost of personal happiness. Utilitarian in that sense (the collective over the individual)
>> - Tends to shy away from confrontation, particularly in tense situations; his first aim is always to defuse, attempts to always be the bigger man - the kinder man - but because of this, _he struggles to hold people truly accountable_; struggles to make decisions when there’s a risk of hurting others or being seen as selfish
>> - Tries to be logical in his decision-making but _often swayed by emotional ties_, especially with family and close crew members
>> - Langhorne was insistent Silver did not learn to wield a weapon, let alone get into a fight; he wanted to best protect her innocence as much as possible, and by denying her the ability to fight, she would not be encouraged to get in a fight. Langhorne ‘bubbled’ her from a lot of the harsh realities and the inherent evil that pirates are. Langhorne would insist she did not need to fight because _he would always be there for her_.
>> - Stark opposite to Presna; Langhorne is the optimistic, ambitious, promising, fatalistic and a ‘big-picture’ sort of guy. He made very few people feel ill of themselves, and _was very quick to make friends_. Silver got her charismatic tendency to make buddies with just about anyone from him. _He always believed there to be something good in everyone._
>> - Both Presna and Langhorne believe in some aspect ‘tough love’; Langhorne always insists on letting Silver find her own way out of problems and social/emotional conflicts, a very ‘throw out the nest’ approach, which never truly works when _he always catches her before she has the chance to fall_.

|[![[silver upside down.png]]](More/More%20Files/Characters/Ascent%20of%20the%20Great%20Deceiver/Silver.md)|**✦ Silver**|*Mentor*|
Silver became a sort of surrogate daughter to Langhorne, something that was especially compelling to him after Meldrick had left him years prior. He feels a strong sense of duty with her, feeling the need to become overly-protective and controlling, in fear of the harm that might come if he does not.
|
|[![[GfpbnAebIAAJOEx.jpg]]](Presna.md)|**✦ Presna**|*Best Friend*|
A lifelong friend that started long before most of the crew had even taken their first breaths; despite their jarringly clashing personalities, beliefs and methods, Langhorne laments on about Presna’s talents, and recognises her methodical ruthlessness as an asset. She is especially useful and sought after when it comes to navigating challenges that require a firm hand.

Their relationship tends to hit conflict when their values misalign; Langhorne’s traditional and overly-empathetic views often clash with Presna’s unapologetic ambition, and while Langhorne sees the necessity in her methods, he open grapples with a sense of moral conflict in regards to her approach in achieving goals. Presna, in turn, tends to see Langhorne's cautious nature as a weakness, frequently perceiving him as too soft or indecisive.
|
|[![[Pasted image 20250511211743.png]]](Meldrick.md)|**✦ Meldrick**|*(Former) Mentee*|
Meldrick, to Langhorne, was like a beloved son; he couldn’t be convinced Meldrick was anything other than a young man in need of guidance, and believed so vehemently that Meldrick has a heart of gold, despite his tendencies.

Langhorne’s desire to help often leads him to prioritize Meldrick’s well-being over the safety of others, even with the knowledge that supporting Meldrick may come at a cost, yet his unwavering hope for redemption drives him to invest emotionally in Meldrick’s potential for change, even as he grapples with the repercussions of Meldrick's actions.

This love for Meldrick has caused Lanhorne to overlook and excuse many of Meldrick’s flaws, believing that with enough guidance and understanding, Meldrick would be able to redeem himself and follow the right path. Langhorne always believed that you can never judge a man based on his worst actions; that forgiveness was always an option.
|
